The Coming Need For Cargo Screening Training
In 2007 congress passed the 9/11 act. As a part of that act, all cargo being transported on cargo aircraft must be screened. This new law is scheduled to take effect on August 1st, 2010. This has the potential to greatly affect the passenger airline industry and could result in severe delays and other logistical nightmares. There is a new need for cargo screening training.
In a direct effort to reduce the very real possibility of flight delays this new requirement could easily generate and in an attempt to ease potential bottlenecks, TSA has implemented the use of cargo screening facilities that will be in place in numerous places around the country. The locations will offer shippers the ability to have their shipments screened prior to departure for the airport. This is hoped to reduce confusion at the airport and ease the stress of the 100 percent requirement. Shippers will also be able to have cargo cleared where they are assembled or packaged maintaining packaging integrity. They will have this facilities as an option, so businesses can choose whether or not they benefit from their use.
Certainly there will be an increased need for those who are qualified to perform the screening operations. Some of the necessary skills will be x-ray screening, x-ray image reading, bomb and explosive detection and the ability to provide electronic trace detection.
A potential screener must learn to spot the potential for bombs and explosives intuitively. This is a skill that will come with time and training. Of course there are a number of training materials and programs available to the person who is interested in learning the art of explosive detection.
X-ray screening and the reading of those images will also be needed. As with explosives, these are skills that can be learned but certainly require extensive training to learn. One must master the equipment and read the images provided in a timely and accurate manner.
Along with programs for the detection of explosives, there are programs and materials available for x-ray screening as well, and some offer both and more specialized training in other areas too. These skills require the potential screener to invest funds and time to get up to speed, however it can be done in a reasonable amount of time.
So the result of the 9/11 act will put added pressure on the TSA and thus the requirement for skilled screeners will certainly increase. This provides a real opportunity for those willing to invest the money and the time to become qualified.
